Who discommends:
I have a very soft corner of my heart for DRAGONFLIGHT. This is the book that started me off on SF and I still think it's a wonderful combination of fantasy and romance.--Isabel (31 Jul 99)
I've read (and own) all of her Pern books and her Crystal Singer books. I like the Dragonflight trilogy, the Dragonsinger trilogy, and her Crystal Singer trilogy the best out of all of them. Some of her newer books seem to be telling the same old story.--Shelly (31 Jul 99)
When this one came up on the SFR 101 list, I really had to sit on myself to go and reread it -- having read it and hated it as a teenager. I remember thinking it was way too concerned with who was sleeping with/mating with whom. (And I was through my about 100th reread of McCaffrey's Harper Hall Trilogy which I loved to death and any book would have difficulty following.) This time through I appreciated the complex relationships and multi-level characters a little better. I still didn't adore it as much as most SF readers seem to, but it was generally entertaining. I also have to respect McCaffrey's rich and original world, that greatly affected the Fantasy genre. (Now is that damning with faint praise, or what? :}) A weak recommend.--Rebekah (18 Aug 99)
Stick me down as a recommend - the early ones are so much better than the later ones!--Tanya (19 Oct 00)
