Want to read books at meetings? Always have a book in your purse or pocket without worrying that it will get bent or damaged? Finally read that Out-of-Print book or a never-in-print story by your favorite author? Hello eBooks!
A much better read was Doranna Durgin's CHANGESPELL LEGACY. A warning to start off with is that it's a long book--almost 400 pages. You can start with this third book in the series; I only vaguely recall DUN LADY'S JESS and now realize I don't recall CHANGESPELL much at all, but was still able to follow CHANGESPELL LEGACY.
We have an opening when the entire council of wizards is wiped out by a pretty violent and ugly explosion of wild and unrecognizable magic. We introduce the main characters, most of them continuing from the first two books, but with the addition of a young stablegirl called Suliya.
After the gruesome disposal of the wizards, the only witness to the scene was - what else? - one of the horses. And what is the way to find out what happened but to turn the horse into a human, keeping all our characters alive and out of the hands of mysterious strangers who seem to want them dead and don't much care how it happens.
The author has matured with this book - the characters actually show a depth and a growth that is pretty wrenching...--BarbaraRead more...

P.C. Hodgell - new stuff at last?
According to the Meisha Merlin site, the P.C. Hodgell short story collection, BLOOD & IVORY: A TAPESTRY, that will be released next month contains new material not in the original BLOOD & IVORY. We also have a new working title for Jame 4 - JAME AT TENTIR. Meisha Merlin looks hopeful that it will come out sometime next year. (Yeah, I've heard that before.)
Diana Wynne Jones books and website
I love Diana Wynne Jones' books. THE MERLIN CONSPIRACY, related to DEEP SECRET, will be published in April 2003. DWJ's site says that TMC's Maxwell Hyde "writes detective stories. A goat falls in love with him." Her site bulletins are really funny, including the one with the sideways swipe at J.K. Rowling. Read about some other DWJ's that we enjoyed ...
Next Liaden book The June 5th Meisha Merlin newsletter (vol. 4) says that the next Liaden Universe book after I DARE, titled BALANCE OF TRADE, has been rescheduled for February 2004. An unrelated original work by Lee and Miller called THE TOMORROW LOG will come out in February 2003 instead. Read more ...
Doris Egan/ Jane Emerson From Doris Egan at sff.net Date: 1997? "I'm afraid that at the moment there are no plans for another 'Ivory' novel... The numbers weren't as good as we'd hoped on the last book, and by now I have two more 'City' books on the burner, along with a number of other things -- an Irish vampire with amnesia, a Napoleonic spy in an imaginary country, and other projects that fascinate me but mean nothing to you at this stage. Yes, as you've gathered, I am working on a sequel to CITY OF DIAMOND. Tal is going to learn some things about being human he would rather not have had to deal with, and Hart has some layers you haven't seen yet. And we finally get exposed to Keylinn's sense of humor at its most dangerous." Read our thoughts on Egan's earlier books ...
Roby James From: Roby James at sff.people.robyj Date: 15 May 1999 "My editor at Del Rey says that they are not allowed to buy anything that does not have the potential for sales in the millions, and my first two books didn't sell to those levels, so I have to keep looking around! I may have found a books-on-demand publisher who will be interested in doing trade paperbacks in limited amounts, and I have five historical romances to try to place with him while I am working on new SF. The two books I have closest to being finished are not the third in the series (which will be called Commandment, by the way)." Read our thoughts on James' earlier books ...
Diana Tregarde Series
From: Mercedes Lackey (alt.pagan newsgroup) Date: 11 Feb 1997 The "Diana Tregarde Investigations." Take, for instance, the undeniable fact that I haven't written (and at this point, don't intend to write) any more of them. Why? THEY DON'T SELL. The numbers are there in black and white. DT books are consistently and vastly outsold by every other type of fantasy we write. Read more at Amazon
Maggy Thomas / Emily Devenport The author, Maggy Thomas , May 20, 2000: Maggy Thomas is also Emily Devenport Maggy Thomas and Emily Devenport are both pseudonyms -- I hope readers who enjoy my books under one name or the other will look for both now. Some day I may sell books under my real name, and then things will get REALLY confusing . . . Read more at Amazon
FIRST TRUTH by Dawn Cook I also recommend it. My thoughts on the book seem to echo Preeti's review (which I just reread.) I like the main characters and their interaction. I also thought it would make a good young adult fantasy also. And it was a relief to read a fantasy that wasn't quite so dark. Which must sound weird since all the wizards were being killed but I've been living in the land of the demons (Hambly). :-) I thought it was well written and a very good first book though I had the same quibbles about the enemy as Preeti.--Linda (29 Jun 02)read more...
DRAGONSTAR by Barbara Hambly I had to force myself to start it after the second book, which was so dark and the h/h torn apart and not as likeable. And I have to admit I've learned more about demons than I ever wanted. But after that complaint it ends. I can recommend this book. If you enjoyed the first book, you will definitely enjoy this one. It starts right off with the hero facing death due to collaborating with demons and yearning for Jenny and wishing he could take back the way he acted last he saw her and Jenny is wishing the same. We have our likeable characters back and they actually get together and spend much of the book that way. :-) So its the last battle to defeat the demons. Lots of action. But I hope her next is free of demons and a little lighter. :-)--Linda (18 Jun 02)read more...

The next Anita Blake novel is titled CERULEAN SINS and will be out on February 6, 2003, according to the Laurell K. Hamilton announcement group. See our September entry for the cover art and dust jacket blurb.
SORCERY AND CECELIA to be reprinted! A Caroline Stevermer fan page notes that the authors have "made a deal with Harcourt to reissue SORCERY AND CECELIA, probably in hardcover, spring 2003, followed by a sequel (tentatively titled THE GRAND TOUR), six to twelve months later." Much excitement and cheering! Read more ...
CASTLE IN THE AIR By Diana Wynne Jones I thought this was a fun book, definitely on the silly side. I wish they hadn't hammered so hard in the advertising/blurb that it was a sequel to HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE. I spent attention looking for that during a lot of the first 2/3rds of the book. When they ultimately reveal how much of a sequel it was, it would have been nice to have been surprised and not relieved. Once again, the romances are a little unbelievable, but since the characters are all larger than life, it's fine. -- Rebekah (03 Jun 02)Read more ...
