A much better read was Doranna Durgin's CHANGESPELL LEGACY. A warning to start off with is that it's a long book--almost 400 pages. You can start with this third book in the series; I only vaguely recall DUN LADY'S JESS and now realize I don't recall CHANGESPELL much at all, but was still able to follow CHANGESPELL LEGACY.
We have an opening when the entire council of wizards is wiped out by a pretty violent and ugly explosion of wild and unrecognizable magic. We introduce the main characters, most of them continuing from the first two books, but with the addition of a young stablegirl called Suliya.
After the gruesome disposal of the wizards, the only witness to the scene was - what else? - one of the horses. And what is the way to find out what happened but to turn the horse into a human, keeping all our characters alive and out of the hands of mysterious strangers who seem to want them dead and don't much care how it happens.

Julie E. Czerneda will edit ODYSSEY, the fourth volume in YA SF anthology series Tales from the Wonder Zone, for Trifolium Books.
P.C. Hodgell - new stuff at last?
According to the Meisha Merlin site, the P.C. Hodgell short story collection, BLOOD & IVORY: A TAPESTRY, that will be released next month contains new material not in the original BLOOD & IVORY. We also have a new working title for Jame 4 - JAME AT TENTIR. Meisha Merlin looks hopeful that it will come out sometime next year. (Yeah, I've heard that before.)
Diana Wynne Jones books and website I love Diana Wynne Jones' books. THE MERLIN CONSPIRACY, related to DEEP SECRET, will be published in April 2003. DWJ's site says that TMC's Maxwell Hyde "writes detective stories. A goat falls in love with him." Her site bulletins are really funny, including the one with the sideways swipe at J.K. Rowling. Next Liaden book The June 5th Meisha Merlin newsletter (vol. 4) says that the next Liaden Universe book after I DARE, titled BALANCE OF TRADE, has been rescheduled for February 2004. FIRST TRUTH by Dawn Cook I also recommend it. My thoughts on the book seem to echo Preeti's review (which I just reread.) I like the main characters and their interaction. I also thought it would make a good young adult fantasy also. And it was a relief to read a fantasy that wasn't quite so dark. Which must sound weird since all the wizards were being killed but I've been living in the land of the demons (Hambly). :-) I thought it was well written and a very good first book though I had the same quibbles about the enemy as Preeti.--Linda (29 Jun 02)read more...
DRAGONSTAR by Barbara Hambly I had to force myself to start it after the second book, which was so dark and the h/h torn apart and not as likeable. And I have to admit I've learned more about demons than I ever wanted. But after that complaint it ends. I can recommend this book. If you enjoyed the first book, you will definitely enjoy this one. It starts right off with the hero facing death due to collaborating with demons and yearning for Jenny and wishing he could take back the way he acted last he saw her and Jenny is wishing the same. We have our likeable characters back and they actually get together and spend much of the book that way. :-) So its the last battle to defeat the demons. Lots of action. CASTLE IN THE AIR By Diana Wynne Jones I thought this was a fun book, definitely on the silly side. I wish they hadn't hammered so hard in the advertising/blurb that it was a sequel to HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE. I spent attention looking for that during a lot of the first 2/3rds of the book. When they ultimately reveal how much of a sequel it was, it would have been nice to have been surprised and not relieved.
